Food Solidarity Conference
On November 14th, a team from Moisson Montreal held a conference at the Université de Montreal for Solidarity Week. The goal was to raise awareness in the university community of the issues relating to agri-food, whether it be locally, regionally or internationally. As a basis for the broadcast of the movie We Feed the World , the presentation rested on the fact that the overconsumption of food results in, most notably, pollution, over-development, waste of food and hunger. As a food bank, Moisson Montreal served a reminder of the importance of re-establishing a collective responsibility and of requiring an ethical and durable management of our food.
Relying on the theme of "From Words to Action" Week, Moisson Montreal hopes that it inspired the students who were present of the importance of social commitment and especially that, as our future, they have the power to change things.

Apples for the Challenge!
Aware that back to school is a difficult time for thousands of families, the population was particularly generous between the 4 th and the 28 th of September during the Kraft Hunger Challenge. More than a half a million was raised in Canada, in addition to the $150 000 from Kraft Canada. In Quebec, more than $47 000 was raised, representing $17 000 more than the initial objective, which allowed food banks to increase their supplies. In Montreal, one of our faithful suppliers, Chenail, Fruits et légumes, generously donated more than $2300 to which an extra $100 was donated by another donor. With the money raised, Moisson Montreal was able to buy 5600 kilograms of apples for community organizations on the island of Montreal.

Recycle cell phones in exchange for foodstuffs
Would you like to contribute to your local food bank on top of helping the environment? The Phones for Food p rogram allows you to do both as you recycle your old cell phone. According to its age and condition, a used cell phone may be worth up to $5, in other words, the equivalent of a jar of peanut butter or a carton of milk.
Click here to contribute to the program in three ways:
- Find the list of collection points in your area;
- Download a mailing label with prepaid postage to mail your cell phone;
- Register your community group, your school or your municipality as a collection point.
Since 2004, Phones for Food has been able to recycle almost 146,000 cell phones, generating $400,000 for food banks across the country.
Good news! Just like Rogers Wireless, all Fido cell phones will now be sold with a recycling envelope with prepaid postage in order to make it easier to donate old cell phones. Before the end of the year, every box will contain an enveloppe. On the photograph: Sylvain Roy, first Vice-President and General Manager of Fido, Johanne Théroux, General Manager of Moisson Montreal and Justin, worthy canine representative of Fido.

Rice for Moisson Montreal
60,000 portions of Minute Rice were shared among food banks in Quebec and seven community organizations. The 18,500 portions distributed to Moisson Montreal were particularly appreciated since rice is a rare foodstuff. "This donation couldn't have come at a better time! Moisson Montreal depends on several strategies to meet demands for rare and nutritious foodstuffs like rice, pasta, meat, baby products as well as cooking ingredients (flour, sugar, etc.)," noted Johanne Théroux, General Manager of Moisson Montreal.

Laurent Paquin, committed for a second year
With his catchy writing, his lively texts and his keen wit, comedian and actor Laurent Paquin is committed to being Moisson Montreal's spokesman for a second year.
Even if helping those in need isn't necessarily the most glamourous thing to do, Laurent emphasizes that it is natural for him to contribute to a worthwhile cause, to combine words with action. When we humbly asked him why he accepted to be involved with our cause for a second year, Laurent replied, "The question must be asked differently: Why wouldn't I accept to do so? This second question is so much easier to respond to because there is nothing to answer, as opposed to the first one, which has so many answers. I don't know if I am being clear, but the important thing to remember is that I am very proud to be associated, for a second consecutive year, with an organization such as Moisson Montreal, which works for a better quality of life for everyone." That's all that needs to be said!
Laurent Paquin is back with shows on November 8th, 9th, and 10th at the Saint-Denis for his tour "Tout est relatif".

The Circle of Leaders
On September 20th last, Moisson Montreal welcomed approximately fifteen members of the Circle of Leaders, a group comprised of donors of more than $1000, for the annual campaign for Centraide.
The participants, from various backgrounds, were given the opportunity to better understand our organization through short presentations during a pleasant luncheon. Guided by Johanne Théroux, chief executive officer of Moisson Montreal, the donors present were able to see the concrete, day-to-day operations of reception, sorting and distribution of foodstuffs during a tour of our huge warehouse. Thanks mainly to the considerable help from Centraide for the past 20 years or more, Moisson Montreal succeeds in developing unifying community projects every year, projects which better respond to the needs of community organizations and those in need.
