A hungry man is not a free man.
Adlaï Stevenson (from a speech September 6th, 1952, Kasson, Minnesota)
Let's Start with Hunger. For the past 25 years, Moisson Montreal has made the fight against poverty its priority. Its position as Canada's largest food bank signifies, unfortunately, that too many Montrealers need food assistance in order to adequately feed themselves. Moisson Montreal recovers and freely redistributes foodstuffs and essential products throughout the year to 210 community agencies on the island of Montreal, thus reaching 112 000 people, 36 000 of those children, every month.
Founded on July 19, 1984, Moisson Montreal was born out of the necessity of helping the greatest number of people possible to feed themselves sufficiently. Conscious that food assistance is not a cure-all, the founders knew that it is nonetheless necessary : when hunger demands attention, no one is able to concentrate on solutions for leaving poverty behind.
By asking for help, families in need are breaking out of their isolation and are able to see that someone is there to support them and help them move forward. The body is fed and so is the spirit and hope. In 25 years, numerous projects were developed to supply long-term tools to the impoverished. By collaborating with Montreal community agencies as well as with numerous public and private partners, Moisson Montreal has helped multiple initiatives see the light of day. However, there is still much more that needs to be done. Moisson Montreal will continue to be present in the community... for as long as it is necessary.
